Forgot to mention: last night during bath time, the boy told me—out of the blue—that he plans on changing his name when he grows up. I said, That’s cool, but you have an excellent name now. The boy said, “You and daddy gave me my name, right?” I said, Yes. And the boy said, “What did my birth— Oh nevermind.”
I said, Your birthmother gave you a name, too. The boy asked, “What did my birthmother name me?” And I told him. Then the boy said, “What does it mean?” I said, It means ‘The Hero.’ The boy asked, “Why did my birthmother name me that?” I said, Maybe because she could tell by looking at your face that you would grow up to be a hero. The boy said, “But my face is different now. Like, my head grew because my brain grew, right?” I said, Right.
The boy asked, “Do you think my birthmother would still recognize me?” I said, Maybe. I don’t know. And the boy said, “Do you think she would call me by the name she gave me or by my real name?” I said, I don’t know.
