Good question. Let me preface by saying that I support any means through which an individual or a couple take to build a family. Honestly, if through some miracle there was a way for two guys to make a baby together, I’m sure busy daddy and I would have explored that option. I mean, have you seen how cute busy daddy was when he as a baby? Have you seen how cute he is now? Adorbz.

Truthfully, though, blood-ties have never really been all that important to me, and while I do occasionally wish that we could have a kid who looked like busy daddy, it was always my intention to adopt.

However, early in our journey to making our family, busy daddy and I met with a surrogacy attorney to find out about that process, but we left the meeting feeling uneasy about the whole thing. I understand and respect why some people choose that route, but it’s expensive, emotionally complicated, and (in a weird way) kind of wasteful, at least to me. If there are children who are already born who need forever families, I’m not sure why we’d go through the expense, the risk, and the heartache that (sometimes) accompanies surrogacy. Just my opinion, bravo to those who choose that route, really. It just wasn’t for us.

In fact, we know both gay and non-gay families that have built beautiful families through surrogacy. 

We chose international adoption the first time around with the boy because we wanted to make sure that we’d have at least one kid, and with international adoption there’s a definitive beginning, middle, and end (the end game being that you get your kid). With domestic adoption, there’s no set timeline, so it could be fast or slow—and there are no guarantees.
